If you plan to tackle jobs that involve larger or longer screws or fasteners, such as decking or framing a house, you will need to add an impact wrench to your tool collection. They are designed specifically for heavy, screwy work where a regular drill/screwdriver might struggle.
There are more impact hammers on the market than ever before. I personally tested the most popular sellers and did not go lightly, because I wanted to know which ones were worth the money and which ones were basically duds.
The right impact wrench for your needs should have enough power to handle the type of project you intend to tackle. Read on to find out how these Best Impact Driver For HVAC differ from regular drills, which tasks they are best suited for, and which were the best (and worst) in my hands-on tests.

Impact drill vs. power drill
At first glance, drills and impact wrenches look alike. However, both have their own purpose.
Impact drills are used to drill pre-drilled holes in a variety of materials and fasten screws; in DIY, they are used to hang shelves, assemble furniture, and attach hinges and brackets. Depending on the power of the drill and the type of bit, bits from 3/64 inches to over 1 inch can be used.
The impact wrench is a small dynamo designed for only one function: to drive various types of fasteners. As a drill, it uses rotating force to drive screws into wood, for example. However, unlike the smooth rotation of a drill, an impact screwdriver uses a rotating hammer to drive threaded fasteners more effectively: in DIY, it can be used to fasten long bridge screws or shear bolts; in wood, it can be used to drive screws into wood.
Unlike drills, impact wrenches do not have a self-centering three-jaw chuck. Instead, they are equipped with a quick-release hexagon chuck that accepts hex shank bits. Some impact wrenches use ⅜-inch sockets, but ¼-inch sockets are more common.
Corded and cordless
Corded impact wrenches, widely available until relatively recently, are now a rarity. When cordless was introduced, it could not compete with the power of corded impact wrenches. Battery life was poor, and only corded impact wrenches could work all day long. Cordless impact wrenches lose power when the batteries run out, while corded impact wrenches are still able to perform at their best as long as the power is on.
However, a cordless impact wrench can deliver as much or more power than a corded impact wrench, even when the battery is charged. Cordless machines are easier to maneuver, especially when working in confined spaces. Batteries can be a problem, but for professionals who need continuous performance, simply buy a spare one or two. Do-it-yourself users and professionals will find that cordless impact wrenches meet both needs.

Torque and speed
Torque is the amount of "torque force" of an impact wrench. It determines the performance of the impact wrench. The greater the torque (usually expressed as in-lbs), the greater the torque force. The torque required depends on the material of construction. For example, screwing a screw into a hardwood requires more torque than screwing into a softwood.
Torque of 800 in-lbs with a small impact wrench provides enough torque force to tighten screws in the home or workshop. For screwing multiple large screws, such as in roofing or house frames, an impact wrench with a torque of 1,500 in-lbs or more is recommended.
The rotational speed (rpm) indicates how many times the bit rotates per minute (typically 800-3,000 rpm). When higher torque is applied, the bit rotates at a lower speed. High-speed rotation is useful for various small and medium-sized fasteners. The torque of the screwdriver will be lower, but in this case high-speed rotation is more important than power.
Grip size
Cordless impact wrenches come in two versions: inline and pistol grip. The inline type has the handle behind the hammer and anvil, like a large screwdriver. The pistol type has the shape of a gun and the handle is under the motor. Cordless impact wrenches also offer a choice of socket sizes designed to fit different sizes of nuts and bolts. The table below shows the socket sizes for each form of impact wrench. Inline wrenches are ideal for working in tight spaces or when pistol grip wrenches are not suitable. Inline impact wrenches are a necessity, especially for machining work on cars and other vehicles.
Pistol impact wrenches are bulky, but the ergonomic handle makes them easier to handle and less tiring to use for long periods of time. Some of these models can be equipped with side handles that allow you to use your body weight to gain more leverage and maintain the correct working angle. If the special adaptation of an inline wrench is not required, a pistol grip impact wrench is an ideal choice.

Voltage
Voltage indicates the energy delivered by the impact wrench. The higher the voltage, the more powerful the motor. This results in higher torque, as mentioned above, which is one of the most important factors in choosing one of these tools.
Impact wrenches fall into two brackets: 12-volt ones and 18- and 20-volt ones. Generally lightweight and compact, 12-volt models make excellent general-purpose tools for homeowners. Professionals who regularly work in confined spaces may also prefer these models. DIY enthusiasts and craftsmen tend to prefer 18- or 20-volt models simply because of their greater power.
There is understandable confusion between 18- and 20-volt cordless impact wrenches. In terms of power they are actually the same thing. An electric motor produces an initial peak of power at startup, which then drops to the rated (standard) voltage. In this case, 20 volts is the peak and 18 volts is the rated value.
Some manufacturers may indicate one or the other in product specifications. People buying an impact wrench should check the torque value, not the voltage. Incidentally, the rated voltage of a 12 V impact wrench is 10.8 V, but manufacturers do not often indicate this.
Brushed and brushless motors
There are two types of motors in power tools: brushed motors and brushless motors.
Brush motors use old-fashioned electric motor technology. It uses brushes to transmit power to a coil. The coil is connected to a shaft that rotates to produce power and torque. Brush motors are relatively low-tech, well-proven and inexpensive. However, the brushes rotate in contact with the coil components, which are subject to wear and tear and require regular replacement.
Brushless motors use a sensor and control board to pass current through the coil and rotate a magnet mounted on the shaft. Brushless motors are more high-tech and efficient than brush-type motors, with higher torque per watt and lower battery consumption. Brushless motors are virtually maintenance-free, as the brushes never need to be replaced.
Most cordless impact wrenches are equipped with brush motors. However, impact wrenches with brushless motors can last longer with the same size battery.
Size and weight
Impact wrenches are often lighter than cordless drills, some weighing as little as 2 pounds. This allows more fasteners to be inserted without fatiguing hands and arms. This is especially important when inserting screws overhead, where regular drills quickly become too heavy. If you do a lot of overhead work, buy a cordless impact wrench, taking into account the weight of the battery.
In terms of size, impact wrenches can access tight spaces where larger drills cannot, and some models are more compact than others. More powerful tools are not necessarily physically larger, so it is possible to get a smaller, more powerful tool.
Batteries
Like drills and other cordless tools, cordless impact wrenches run on 12-, 18- and 20-volt rechargeable batteries. The batteries must be appropriate for the voltage of the tool. For example, if you have a 12-volt cordless impact wrench, you will need a 12-volt battery; an 18-volt battery will not provide more power.
Batteries also have an ampere-hour (Ah) value. This varies. Think of the amount of gasoline in your car's tank: an 18-volt, 4.0 ampere-hour battery has more "fuel" than an 18-volt, 2.0 ampere-hour version, so an impact wrench with a 4.0 ampere-hour battery will run twice as long. This means that the operating time will be twice as long.
The disadvantages of high-power batteries are higher cost and longer charging times. Most tools come standard with a 1.5- or 2.0-ampere battery. If run time is important, it is recommended to purchase a higher wattage replacement.

Safety
Impact hammers are noisy. Manufacturers may claim to have noise reduction technology, but all models tested in this guide exceed 85 decibels, so hearing protection is recommended; in a do-it-yourself environment, it is highly recommended; in a commercial environment, a hammer with a power rating of at least 3.5 kW is recommended. In commercial environments, it is an OSHA requirement.
The best impact wrenches offer a high level of control, but be aware of the injuries that excessive torque can cause. Sudden twisting can cause painful wrist sprains. Drills have a clutch that stops torque when the fastener encounters resistance. Impact wrenches do not have clutches, but almost all have variable-speed triggers to reduce power once the fastener is fully engaged. Some also have additional speed and torque settings to control torque.
Additional features
Depending on your use of the impact wrench, it may be worth purchasing the kit with the following additional features
Variable-speed trigger - This is available on most impact wrenches. The stronger the grip, the faster the rotation. Some also have more than one speed setting to provide more control when hammering different sized devices or different materials.
Rubber handle - Has a dual function. To ensure a firm grip on the tool and reduce hand and arm fatigue by reducing vibration between the tool and the body.
Interchangeable batteries - Some manufacturers design their screwdrivers to use batteries that can be used in other power tools of the same brand. In these cases, the user can save money by purchasing a bare tool. However, check for compatibility with older cordless tools. Batteries of different brands rarely work, although converters may be available.
Charge indicator - Some have a charge indicator, which is useful for estimating the remaining battery charge.
Working lights - LED lights built into the front of the driver are especially useful for working in dark areas.
Combination - Kits Many brands sell impact wrenches as part of a set for those buying multiple tools. Combination kits usually include an impact wrench and a standard cordless drill. They may also include an impact drill, circular saw, work lamp, drill bits and/or batteries.
Inserts for impact wrenches - Screwdrivers and other standard drill bits are usually hexagonal and can be of adequate size. However, they are not strong enough for impact wrenches and can wear out or break quickly. Look for bits marked as for impact wrenches.
On-board bit storage - Some impact wrenches have a small clip or magnet to hold the screwdriver bits ready for use.
