Best Angle Grinder For Welding
Corded angle grinders
Corded angle grinders must always be powered. This can be a problem when working in remote areas or when electricity is not available in the work area.
However, for most jobs, corded angle grinders are an advantage. They are much cheaper, have no power sags, and can be used indefinitely. In addition, corded grinders are often lighter because they do not have the added weight of a battery.
Cordless angle grinders
Cordless grinders are battery-powered and do not require a power supply. In addition, they can be maneuvered while working without cables getting in the way.
However, these angle grinders are much more expensive and often do not come with batteries and chargers, making them even more expensive.
The lithium-ion batteries used in cordless tools last about 500 charges and, if used daily, can last about 18 months at full power. After these 500 cycles, the batteries can still be used, but their capacity is reduced.
The exact number of cycles depends on the chemistry and working conditions. Another problem with battery grinders is the voltage drop when the battery runs out. For example, if a fully charged battery has a voltage of 24 V, as it grinds and the battery capacity is used up, the voltage will also drop.
This results in a drop in power that reduces torque and RPM. Not all battery-powered models will have these problems, since it is an electronic device, but it is good to keep this in mind.
In addition, the battery and the grinder can overheat if the grind is too strong. This heat will adversely affect the lithium-ion battery and shorten its life. Therefore, heavy work will definitely drain the battery faster. Also, it is never a good idea to carry only one battery with you in the field. Some people also carry a charger and a spare battery for the cordless tool with them in the field.
Finally, the battery adds weight to the angle grinder, making it harder to hold it all day long. However, despite their many disadvantages, cordless grinders are taking the market by storm. They are also used by professionals because they are easy to use on the go.

How To Choose The Best Angle Grinder For Welding | Ultimate Guide 2024
Pneumatic angle grinders
Our review is not about any pneumatic ones, but it is worth noting that they do exist. However, most people would never use these angle grinders because they require an air compressor. It is not as simple as plug-and-grind because the compressor must first reach the required pressure. However, they are used in welding shops and other stationary workshops where air compressors are available.
Dimensions of angle grinder discs
Image of a grinder using a large 9-inch angle grinder and a small 4.5-inch angle grinder.
All angle grinders are sized according to the size of the grinding wheels supported. Many require a standard small angle grinder that supports a 4.5-inch wheel.
Angle grinders are available for the following disc sizes.
- 4½ inches - 115 mm
- 5 inches - 125 mm
- 6 inches - 150 mm
- 7 inches - 180 mm
- 9 inches - 230 mm
Some angle grinders can handle discs larger than those for which they were designed, but before using a large disc on a small angle grinder, check carefully.
Revolutions per minute (RPM)
The speed of angle grinders is rated by the number of revolutions per minute. Note, however, that manufacturers provide the RPM of angle grinders without grinding wheels. Thus, as soon as a grinding wheel is mounted, the square footage decreases.
The larger the angle grinder, the lower the RPM. This is not always the case, but it is a general rule. Also remember that grinding wheels are rated according to the maximum rpm at which they can be used. So don't load an 11,000-rpm wheel on a 12,000-rpm grinder.
Guard
Angle grinders always have a guard. This is a safety device to prevent serious injury or death. Always maintain the blade guard and adjust it to protect yourself in case the grinder explodes and shrapnel escapes. For this purpose, keep the open end of the guard away from you and the closed end facing you.
Protection for angle grinders
Angle grinders such as Milwaukee's 4 1/2-inch and 5-inch grinders make it easy to adjust the guard without tools. This is convenient and increases the likelihood that the operator will not adjust the guard because "it's only a small cut."
However, this is contrary to OSHA safety regulations and all other angle grinders and is not recommended. Therefore, we cannot in good conscience recommend doing so.
Handles
Like guards, handles should be worn at all times unless they can be removed. The handle provides a firmer grip and reduces the possibility of the grinder slipping out of the hand.
All of our recommended grinders are compatible with right-handed and left-handed handle changes. All grinders also feature ergonomic, non-slip handles for safe tool use.
Dust protection
The best angle grinders are equipped with a dust ejection system or guard to prevent dust from getting into the motor and gears.
Brush and brushless angle grinders
Electric motors use electromagnetic fields to generate rotational power. Brush motors use a pair of carbon brushes to transfer DC power and create an electromagnetic field that rotates a permanent magnet.
Brushless motors use electronic circuitry in the motor to optimize power at the stator and create an electromagnetic field without the use of carbon brushes.
Switch types
Angle grinders have three types of on/off switches, which should be used according to the level of safety and depending on the task at hand.
Slide switch - The most common and simple is the slide switch, which locks in the ON position and allows the angle grinder to operate without having to hold down the trigger. Most grinders today require only a light touch in the off direction to turn off the switch. This method does not fatigue the hands, but it is dangerous because if the grinder falls, it continues to operate. This can damage the work area and cause injury.
Paddle switch - The paddle switch is part of the body, usually at the bottom of the angle grinder. A paddle switch is recommended for all DeWalt angle grinders. The trigger must be held down to turn the grinder on, and when released it turns off. It is safer than a slide switch, but can fatigue the hand over time. However, it is less likely to cause injury if the angle grinder is dropped.
Trigger handle - common on larger grinders, such as 7" and 9" grinders. It is shaped like a drill and has a handle on the back of the grinder.
Electric brushes for angle grinders
Brushless motors are far more efficient, but are generally found in cordless angle grinders. They generate less heat than brush motors, resulting in a longer life of the power tool. They also provide greater power output and are less likely to stall.

FAQs
What is the best size angle grinder for welders?
The size of the grinder depends on the type of work you usually do. The size of a grinder is the size of its disc, not its length. Therefore, a 6-inch grinder is capable of working on smaller parts, but the same grinder used for thicker parts will be much more difficult to use. The most common size of angle grinders is 4.5 inches.
The larger the grinding wheel or disc, the deeper the cut. Smaller discs and circles also move faster than larger ones, so they are better suited for grinding or cutting metals. They are also the most sensitive to overheating. That's why angle grinders are the best choice-they have adjustable speed settings to avoid overheating on a higher setting than necessary.
What is the best way to get an angle grinder?
It is necessary to have a strong grip on the angle grinder. Wear gloves and face protection and make sure you have a firm grip with both hands. Where possible, use a guard. Make sure you are oriented to send debris downward, not toward you. Also, make sure the wheel is rotated away from sharp edges.
A grinding wheel catching on an edge can cause the grinder to retract, so you need to have enough grip to control it and prevent this from happening. It is also necessary to make sure that the wire brush is facing the correct direction. The grinder should be positioned so that the brush rotates away from the object being ground, rather than toward it. When slicing, press very lightly, not too hard and not too weak.
What is the best angle grinder grinding wheel for welding?
There are four main types of angle grinder grinding wheels for welding and machining. These include grinding wheels, flap discs, cutting discs, and metal wheels. Each has a different application, but grinding wheels are the most commonly used.
These wheels are consumable and can only be used for so long before they need to be replaced. For this reason, one may be tempted to buy extremely cheap or inexpensive grinding wheels. This is a bad idea, as it can lead to using the wheels for a long period of time before they need to be replaced.
These wheels do not last as long as their mid-range counterparts and do not maintain as well. This means that in the long run, you end up spending more, rather than less.
Which is the strongest grinder?
The strength of a grinder can refer to a few different factors, such as its motor power, durability, and grinding ability.
In terms of motor power, the Baratza Forté AP and Mahlkönig EK43 are two of the strongest grinders on the market, with powerful motors that can handle large amounts of coffee beans and grind them quickly and consistently.
In terms of durability, grinders made with high-quality materials such as stainless steel are generally considered to be stronger and more long-lasting than those made with cheaper materials. The Mazzer Mini and the Rancilio Rocky are two examples of durable grinders that are known for their sturdiness.
When it comes to grinding ability, the strength of a grinder is often measured by its ability to produce consistent and uniform particle sizes. The Baratza Vario and the Breville Smart Grinder Pro are two examples of grinders that are known for their precise and consistent grinding abilities.
Overall, the strength of a grinder can depend on a variety of factors, so it's important to consider your specific needs and preferences when choosing a grinder.
How many watts is a good angle grinder?
The power of an angle grinder is typically measured in watts, and the appropriate wattage for a good angle grinder can depend on the specific application and workload.
For light to medium-duty tasks such as cutting and grinding small metal pieces or sharpening garden tools, an angle grinder with a wattage rating of 500 to 800 watts should be sufficient.
For heavier-duty tasks such as cutting and grinding thick metal or concrete, an angle grinder with a wattage rating of 1000 watts or more would be recommended.
However, it's important to note that higher wattage doesn't necessarily equate to better performance. The quality of the motor, construction and other features of the angle grinder can also impact its overall performance.
Ultimately, when choosing an angle grinder, it's important to consider the specific tasks you will be using it for and choose a model that is appropriate for your needs.
Which is better 4-inch or a 5-inch angle grinder?
Whether a 4-inch or 5-inch angle grinder is better depends on the specific tasks and materials you will be working with. Here are some factors to consider:
- Cutting depth: A 5-inch angle grinder will typically have a larger cutting depth than a 4-inch grinder, which can make it more suitable for cutting thicker materials. If you need to make deep cuts in metal or concrete, a 5-inch grinder may be more appropriate.
- Maneuverability: A 4-inch angle grinder is generally more compact and lightweight than a 5-inch grinder, which can make it easier to maneuver in tight spaces or for extended periods of time. If you need to work in a confined area or require a tool that is easy to handle, a 4-inch grinder may be a better choice.
- Speed: A 5-inch angle grinder typically has a higher RPM (revolutions per minute) than a 4-inch grinder, which can make it more effective at grinding and polishing tasks. However, this also means that it can be more difficult to control, especially for beginners.
- Cost: In general, 4-inch angle grinders tend to be less expensive than 5-inch grinders, which can be an important factor if you are on a tight budget.
Ultimately, the choice between a 4-inch or 5-inch angle grinder depends on your specific needs and preferences. If you need a tool for cutting thicker materials and don't mind the added weight and size, a 5-inch grinder may be the better option. If you need a more maneuverable tool for lighter-duty tasks, a 4-inch grinder may be a better choice.
