I have been sanding wood for many years using sandpaper and blocks. Until I discovered electric sanders. I had always wanted to master the sander, so one day I jumped in.
We work with wood a lot, and having an electric sander makes every project much cleaner (and smoother!). It allows us to finish the work. It also sanded the wood much faster than sandpaper alone. If you like working with wood, go to … An electric sander is an important investment.
What is an electric sander?
It removes small imperfections in the wood, smoothest out uneven or rough surfaces, and makes it much easier to paint or stain the wood surface.
There are different types of manual sanders, each with its own advantages. The one pictured is called a mouse sander (and the price is awesome!) .
It grips like a computer mouse. If there is a hard-to-reach spot on a project, the sander has a smaller tip to reach that spot.
Manual sanders are very inexpensive and useful for any wood project. They are also safe for children to use with adult supervision.

Using an electric hand sander
When the power is turned on, the sandpaper moves quickly. You may find it painful when your hands touch the sandpaper.
However, hands or other people touching the paper while the sander is running will not cause injury. The sander in the photo is electric, so it must be plugged in.
Once plugged in, the sander will not start unless the switch is turned on.
How to sand small items using a manual sander
Sanding is an easy way to take a woodworking project from DIY to professional. It is a process that removes cracks in the wood and smoothest the surface evenly. Sanding can be a bit time-consuming, but with the right tools, it is manageable.
This section describes how to sand manually using a block. There are other methods, but hand sanding is better suited for smaller projects that only require a little sanding, such as doing a single piece of wood or touching up a large project. For larger jobs, we recommend employing an electric sander such as an orbital sander, belt sander, or paddle sander.
Step 1: Selecting Sandpaper
Before beginning sanding, select the grit of sandpaper best suited for the project. Sandpaper that is too coarse will scratch the surface, while sandpaper that is too fine will make the job take longer than necessary. If the material is very coarse, start with coarse paper (40-60 grit), then change to medium (80-120 grit), and finally to fine (150-180 grit). If the material is already in good condition and you want an even smoother finish, start with fine paper (150-180-grit), then move to very fine paper (220-240-grit), and finally to extra fine paper (280-320-grit).
Step 2: Positioning the sandpaper
Place the sanding block along the edge of the sandpaper. Trace around the sanding block, leaving a few extra centimeters so that the paper can be sandwiched. Cut out the traced shape with scissors.
Step 3: Secure the sandpaper
On models equipped with sanding blocks, loosen the clamps on the sanding blocks. The clamps can usually be loosened or tightened by turning a small nut or knob. Then insert the cut sandpaper between the clamps and retighten the clamps until the paper is firmly secured. Some sanding blocks use a tear-off adhesive to hold the sandpaper in place, making the process even easier.

Step 4: Start sanding
Hold the handle of the sanding block and press the sander against the material as you move forward. Be sure to sand along the grain of the wood. Sanding against the grain of the wood will scratch or tear the wood, making sanding pointless.
Step 5: Paper replacement
If necessary, replace the original sandpaper with a finer grit. Repeat the previous step until the workpiece is sanded as desired. Remove saw dust with a cleaning cloth.
Type of sandpaper to use:
There are different types of sandpaper depending on the type of wood and the project you are making. The coarseness of the sandpaper is called the grit number.
The smaller the grit number, the coarser the sandpaper. Most sanders have a specific shape of sandpaper to use, rather than random sandpaper.
To replace the sandpaper, simply peel off the old sheet and press on a new sheet. Most sanders use a Velcro-type material that holds the pad in place.
You have to buy the right sandpaper for the right model of sander to use it properly.
I strongly recommend that you buy an electric sander with a dust collector. It will not catch all dust, but it will catch a lot of it.
This is especially important if you have respiratory problems or allergies like I do. Don’t irritate your sinuses!
If you are a sensitive person or have some problems, I suggest that you wear a mask in addition to buying a sander with a dust trap.

How to use the power sander?
It is recommended that safety goggles, ear protection, and a dust mask be worn when using the electric sander. These precautions are intended to protect you from wood dust that can accumulate in the air during sanding.
For belt sanders, first position the tracking knob by turning the sander so that the forward handle is on the table. Next, check the belt to determine the direction to trace. To do this, return the sander to its original position, turn it on, and check the direction in which the belt is tracking. If it needs to be replaced, turn the knob clockwise to move the belt to the left and counterclockwise to move it to the right.
Then move the sander along the grain of the wood to make it easier. Before applying to the surface, turn on the switch and let it run for a few seconds to increase the speed. Apply the sander slowly to the surface, running it long and evenly along the grain of the wood.
Be careful not to press too hard at this point to avoid cutting into the board. Stop and check the work: the last thing you need is uneven sanding.
For orbital sanders and detail sanders, the first thing to do is to turn them on and run them at full speed. Then, place it gently while applying light pressure in the direction of the grit.
This type of sander is for finishing the surface rather than shaping it, so it is important not to press too hard. The base should be flush with the wood to avoid creating ripples on the surface.
Electric Sander Safety

Before you begin sanding, think about safety. Read the sander’s manual and follow the procedures specific to that model.
- Wear safety glasses with side shields or goggles.
- Wear a respirator when sanding. Some jobs may require a dust collection system or a work vacuum cleaner with an appropriate adapter.
- Use other safety equipment if necessary. Some types of work may require hearing protection, work gloves, or other safety equipment.
- Avoid jewelry and loose-fitting clothing.
- Wear non-slip shoes. Non-slip work boots or work shoes are recommended.
- Make sure that hair, clothing, gloves, etc. do not touch moving parts.
- Make sure the work area is dry, clean, and free of debris.
- Disconnect the sander from the power supply, outlet, and battery before installing the workpiece to be sanded, connecting accessories, or performing any cleaning or maintenance.
- Make sure the power switch is off before connecting the tool to the power source.
- Use an extension cord of the type specified in the instruction manual.
